Akron, Ohio Comic Con
I paid a visit to the Akron ComicCon this past weekend. In my opinion it was well worth the $10.00 admission price. If you're used to the larger ComicCons like Wizard World this one was much smaller but still had a variety of vendors. I like meeting other artists and getting inspired by all the talent on display. Yeah, for $10.00 I'll be going again.

98 and feeling great
Here's another quick caricature from the same event as the last couple except this charming lady is a tad older.

75 years and going strong
I met this young couple at an event recently and they really inspired me. The lady is 92 and her husband is 95. They have been married for 75 years! She is as chipper as most people I know that's half her age. This is the great thing about creating live drawings at parties, you get to meet wonderful folks like these!

dude memory sketch
Here is a pen and marker sketch based on a guy I saw at a wedding reception of all places. It was a laid back country themed reception. Thin guy, work boots with shorts, yeah gotta draw it!

Selfie
The beginnings of a caricature artist's selfie. I started by taking an actual selfie (not to post anywhere mind you). I used the photo as a reference and sketched out my caricaturized likeness with pencil on paper then scanned the drawing. I then opened it in Manga Studio and traced the scan on a separate layer paying more attention this time to the line quality. The drawing eventually received the color treatment but I'll save that for later.

Digital Caricature for corporate project
A digital caricature I did for a company project. This drawing was combined with others to be printed on a poster. Unfortunately I was asked not to post the finished group image.

Eagle Tattoo
This is a tattoo that a friend got recently that was based on a old drawing of mine. Come to think of it, I originally did the drawing for another friend to be turned into a tattoo but he ended up changing it somewhat. It turned out very well.

Bad Posture
The title to this post is a bit misleading. The posture of this gent isn't the best but it's actually a lot less boring than someone with great posture. This sketch was done from a photo in just a few seconds. I was inspired by the subject in the photo and wanted to quickly get my thoughts down on a nearby scrap of paper. Body language to artists and especially caricature artists is pure inspiration and we like to celebrate the differences and imperfections of everyone around us. To the average person it may seem like the artist is insulting someone with their pen when in the artist's reality it's the furthest thing from the truth.

Client Comments
Today I received a very nice email from a recent client regarding the live caricatures I drew for their event. "Sam!
You were tremendous! Thank you so much for elevating the evening. I have
worked with many caricature artists in the past and you are by far my favorite
in terms of skill and personality!
I wish I could have you at all (XYZ events)".
I also want to say that this particular client was very professional and their team worked very hard to make the event a success!

The Black Pig!
A cool window sign from the Black Pig restaurant in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Oh. (near West Side Market). I really liked the sign so I took a photo. Not sure who the artist is but it's a very good sketchy type drawing.

Obama pencil - more process
Yet more progress on the Obama caricature. Again, as you can see by the date on the photo it's pretty old. There's a stark difference between the basic lines sketched out and the much more finished look of the rendered b&w values side by side.

Obama drawing process
I thought I would post a photo from the beginning of the Obama drawing. As you can see by the date on the pic it's from nearly two years ago.

President Obama
A pencil caricature drawing of President Obama for 'Exaggerated Features' which is a quarterly publication for ISCA (International Society of Caricature Artists) members. Members can submit their art to be included in the magazine. His face offers so many opportunities for exaggeration.

Pug
A line drawing of a pug without the eyeballs which makes him look like some kind of possessed pooch. I drew this with pen then scanned it and colored digitally which I will post soon.

Colored pencil caricature completed. Hands are difficult to draw but I like the way these turned out.

Colored Pencil Commission
A midway process pic of a recent b&w drawing. I loved drawing this one. He has an interesting face with dark hair and beard that translates well on paper.

Photoshop painting
I created this in Photoshop for a friend. The guy in the image is his father with one of their favorite
bulls. This is one of my favorite creations so far for different reasons. The client provided clear photos with very good natural lighting which makes the process much easier.
